Founded circa 2000 B.C., Miletos, where the foundations of philosophy that fed Anatolian culture and history were laid, was a very important harbor and trade center until the 3rd century A.D. Miletos is one of the vital harbor sites of Ionian Union. When the harbor was filled with the alluvia carried by the Menderes River, Miletos remained some 9 km inland from the sea and thus started losing its importance. Looted by Persians in 494 B.C., the town was rebuilt later.

Priene
Priene used to be by the sea once. However, the old town was abandoned in the 4th century B.C. and the current Priene and a harbor a few kilometers west of it were built. The water spring in front of Priene and the water carried from the mountains were being used by the plain people since the Hellenistic ages. Priene, on of the most beautiful sites of the Hellenistic age was reigned by the Pergamum Kingdom after Alexander the Great, and later on by the Romans.
